A national day of commemoration will be held on March 21 2015 to recognise and commemorate the contribution and sacrifice of Australian troops who served in Afghanistan and the Middle East.

It is expected that the 400 Australian military personnel still serving in Afghanistan – in training and support roles – will largely be home by then.

Commemorative activities to mark the end of Operation Slipper will include parades of current and former Australian Defence Force and support personnel.

Australia’s mission in Afghanistan has come at a heavy human cost - 40 Australian soldiers lost their lives and more than 260 personnel were wounded.

My name is Barry Stevens, ex 6RAR. I am currently employed in PNG as a Construction Manager. The company I work for has asked me to find an ex-military workshop manager for our large fleet of plant equipment. We would specifically like to employ an ex SSM or Sgt simply because we need someone with the ability to train/improve the capability of our current national team of fitters as well as get in and get there hands dirty when needed. They must be able to plan ahead and schedule servicing, maintain a parts store and order in more as need be. We would prefer a single man simply because the position will include extended periods in the field living in man camps throughout PNG. This is a full time position (not FIFO). There is a very good salary package that includes 5 weeks paid leave a year and 2 return trips to Australia for leave breaks. Again we are looking for someone who knows there way around heavy machinery, manage a workshop and has the ability to work with and train our National Staff. Yesterday, Clare and I visited Ron to sort out some DVA business and offer our ongoing support.  We were also lucky to share some time with his youngest brother and sister-in-law and let me tell you that they never broke the mould after Ron was born.  J
